Biodynamic Certified

Many organic wine producers claim they are also farming according to biodynamic practices but actually very few are officially biodynamic certified. The two main biodynamic certifications are: Demeter and Biodyvin

DEMETER

Demeter International is the largest certification organization for biodynamic agriculture which was founded upon the principles of Rudolph Steiner, and is one of three predominant organic certifiers.

Its name is a reference to Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and fertility. Demeter Biodynamic Certification is used in over 50 countries to verify that biodynamic products meet international standards in production and processing.
The Demeter certification program was established in 1928, and as such was the first ecological label for organically produced wines.

Qualifications

Land

Meet the National Organic Program (NOP) standard and be managed according to the Demeter Biodynamic Farm Standard for one year

Livestock integration

Integrate animals into the arable farming system

Biodiversity and ecosystem preservation

Preserve biodiversity and ecosystems

Soil husbandry

Use biodynamic preparations to stimulate soil regeneration and essential organism growth

Animal treatment

Treat animals with respect as sentient beings, and do not dehorn cows, debeak poultry, or dock tails

Genetically engineered organisms

Prohibit genetically engineered organisms

Additives

Use a limited number of necessary additives in processing, and prohibit iodisation, nitrates, and "natural" flavors
