Château Cheval Blanc, 1er Grand Cru Classé A de St. Emilion
Château Cheval Blanc is a Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in the Classification of Saint-Emilion wine. The estate obtained this highest possible distinction in the first classification of Saint-Emilion wines in 1954.
Located in the commune of Saint-Emilion, but bordering on Pomerol, the estate consists of 39 hectares planted with 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is known to use a high proportion of Cabernet Franc in its blend.
The estate won medals in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, and they are still prominent on its labels.
Château Cheval Blanc is one of the rare estates with vines in a single plot that has remained practically identical for nearly a century and a half. The Château is owned at 50% by LVMH and Mr. Pierre Lurton is the estate manager.
The estate's second wine is named Le Petit Cheval. The average annual production is 6000 cases of the Grand vin and 2500 cases of the second wine.
