Wines of Pomerol Appellation
Pomerol, which is located on Bordeaux Right Bank, covers an area that is roughly three kilometres wide by 4 kilometres long, representing about one-seventh of the size of its neighbour Saint-Emilion. There are only 800 hectares under vine in Pomerol, approximately 140 châteaux but no co-operatives.
The wine produced in Pomerol is mainly from Merlot with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role.
There is no official classification for the châteaux of Pomerol.
However, some wine critics have over the years come up with their own personal classifications. You will find below the classification released in 2001 by Clive Coates, MW, in his book “An Encyclopedia of the Wines and Domaines of France”.
