Château Pichon Longueville Baron, commonly named Château Pichon Baron, is classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
The Pichon Baron estate is located at the southern end of the commune of Pauillac near the St. Julien appellation. The estate comprises 73 hectares of high-quality gravelly soil planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%) whose vine average age is 35 years.
The original estate was constructed by the architect Charles Burguet in 1851 in a neo-Renaissance style. Charles Burguet also built Château Palmer from 1857 to 1860. In 1988, new cellars and buildings were constructed following the organization of an architectural competition.
Apart from the Grand Vin, Pichon Baron produces two other wines: Les Tourelles de Longueville which was formerly considered the second wine of Château Pichon Baron has become a separate cru and is made from a single Merlot dominant plot at the property, called Sainte-Anne.
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron which is produced since vintage 2012 is now the second wine of Pichon Baron.
Since 1987 the estate belongs to AXA Millésime, a French Insurance company which also owns Château Pibran (Pauillac), Château Suduiraut (Sauternes), Domaine de l’Arlot (Burgundy), Quinta do Noval (Port) and Disznoko (Tokaj).
