Visit at Château Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan, April 2022


Château Haut-Bailly is a Bordeaux wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Crus Classés Crus for red wine in the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959. The winery is located south of the city of Bordeaux, in the commune of Léognan.

The vineyard is believed to have been created during the 16th century.

The soil consists of sand mixed with the gravel that gives the Graves appellation its name.

The vineyard of 30 hectares is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.


Haut-Bailly has successfully maintained 4 hectares of century-old vines, planted at the end of the 19th century. This single plot is unusually interwoven with 6 varieties of vine: 1/12 Carmenère, 1/12 Merlot, 1/12 Cabernet Franc, 1/12 Malbec, 1/12 Petit Verdot and 7/12 Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are the heart of Haut-Bailly, a fundamental part of its genetic makeup.

The grapes are harvested by hand and processed in a new winery which is very well integrated into the landscape just near by the original estate building.


Unlike many producers from the Graves appellation, no white wine is made at Haut-Bailly. The average production is 150,000 bottles annually. The second wine which used to be named La Parde de Haut-Bailly, is since 2018 named Haut-Bailly II.

The third wine which was produced since 1987 under the name “Pessac-Léognan” bears since 2018 the name of “HB”.
