Brand story

Timeless by Silver Oak

For its first forty-odd years Silver Oak made one wine and one wine only: Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in American oak, released when the winery judged it ready. That single-minded discipline, set out by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer in 1972, became the house identity. Timeless is the Duncan family’s deliberate step outside it — a Napa Valley blend of the classic Bordeaux varieties rather than a straight Cabernet, and the first wine to carry the Silver Oak name without following the Cabernet-only rule.

The blend is drawn from the family’s estate vineyards across Napa Valley, with Cabernet Sauvignon at its core joined by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec in proportions that shift with the vintage, so that each component contributes what the year gives it. Ageing takes in French oak alongside the American oak from the winery’s own Missouri cooperage, softening the vanilla-and-coconut signature into something rounder and more savoury. The result is recognisably Silver Oak in its generosity and polish, but broader in the middle and more layered in aroma — a house wine of blending rather than of a single variety.

Testing notes

Timeless is generous and layered, with blackberry, cocoa, and sweet baking spice over rounded tannins and a long, warm finish.
